Client Story – Virtual Teams
Working virtually is already a reality for many people and it often presents real problems for collaboration. Our client, a global Pharmaceuticals giant, faces the very real challenge of getting virtual workers to really work.
In the past they have held a face-to-face meeting to launch virtual collaborations using a mixture of feel-good exercises and personality questionnaires to encourage self-disclosure. Although enjoyable these launches have had little lasting effect on the way they work together and have failed to create the motivation needed to energise virtual working.
We were commissioned to help a new strategically important group to work virtually. Our consultancy with senior management led to a launch event held at a central office location that used the TRIBE methodology to create corporate team building activities to establish core beliefs. Members experienced the effect on engagement and motivation for themselves and learnt transferable skills that have helped them be more effective in other virtual collaborations. Subsequently we have supported them with virtual coaching to develop their capability to run effective virtual meetings, maintain motivation and build momentum.
Our approach is now being used to support virtual collaboration across the US sales force.
Client story – Leading in Defence
The UK Defence Academy is responsible for strategic leadership skills development involving training courses and coaching for all senior military officers and civil servants in defence.
A major challenge in defence is that as officers become more senior they move from working predominantly in the confines of their own service to working in an often-complex matrix structure across services. This trend has accelerated with last year’s Strategic Defence and Security Review.
Working in close collaboration with Academy experts we have designed and delivered training programmes that help officers learn to work collaboratively across the matrix, overcoming powerful historical cultural barriers. The programmes have ranged from half-a-day to three-days in duration and have been for both individual officers and intact matrix groups.
Participants learn the TRIBE methodology – a simple to use and reliable approach that enables them to systematically establish beliefs that drive engagement, motivation and increase collaborative capability.
Programmes have been running for 4 years and hundreds of officers ranging from Colonels, Captains and Wing Commanders to Generals, Admirals and Air Vice Marshals have consistently applauded the practicality and impact of the TRIBE approach. Validation studies conducted by the Academy have shown an impressive Return on Investment.
Client story – ROI in the City
Return on Investment of more than 1000% was the outcome for a large Investment Fund Manager in London that asked us to run facilitator training for the whole senior HR team, including the HR Director.
The organisation was spending hundreds of thousands of pounds each year on off-sites run by external facilitators and wanted to develop their internal capability.
We ran a 3-day Advanced Facilitation course designed to meet their specific needs. The HR leaders learnt to use our cognitive psychology inspired Teamship development methodology as well as a systemic approach for handling the “Darkside” of teams. Developed from Systemic Family Therapy the “Teamship Darkside” is a paradigm shift that enables facilitators to understand and deal with intractable recurring problems between individuals.
After training participants said that for the first time they understood why so much of the coaching they were buying had little effect. They were better able to understand and accurately diagnose recurring performance problems and select the right interventions, saving more than £200k on coaching and facilitation fees in the first six months giving an ROI of more than 1000%. Increased confidence to work with difficult individuals and facilitate teams in conflict made them better HR business partners.
